Thanks for your reply.I would like to approach this conversation using the human voice as my focus.
My experience with compressers of the norm (so we shall say)is that the predominate frequency needing to be compressed contains the highest amount of voltage. This triggering voltage/frequency then diminishes (compresses) the entire broadband audio spectrum.
This leads to immeadent precievable loss in the hi freq range (as illustrated in the DBX 160 manuals)and of course a reduction in the rest of the frequencys and the dynamic range.By having the capacity to separate into 4 bands and compress only the frequencys that usually tend to be annoying,it would seem to me to be a rather powerful tool as opposed to normal broad band compressers when tracking. With the use of the BSS 901 compression feature only active in one (or more if selected) of the desired frequency realms the other frequency bands are not affected (except if those other frequency bands are adjusted to activate). This allows the majority of frequencys to pass thru without being subject to the artifacts of normal broad band compression.(sonic trademarks of certain devices not withstanding)
In live applications they are amazing for putting vocals (and instruments) right into the mix.Essentially a 4 band parametric compresser with expansion capeabilitys.
Again and back to my original question,I am just curious why they have not been widely embraced for tracking purposes.Perhaps you are correct due to there hi cost V/S the preformance they deliver-Still!!!,cheaper than some others availiable in todays market.Of course we are talking real gear here and not the "B" or "M" words.
If you ever have an opportunity to try one,I highly recommend them especially on vocals.XTA also has a similiar tool but with 3 band capeability.
Don"t get me wrong, not the end all device.I am not tossing my LA- compressers out but the BSS901 is yet another nice tool to explore.
I am not affiliated with BSS,so this is just my opinion.
I am just a Pissed Off Pro-Using these and other tools in the trenchs.
