Re: compressors

I've used most of the ones you mentioned. I would take the Berhinger as happily as any of those. Its got pro features and its reasonably quiet and very reliable. I've had problems the Behringer solved that I could not solve with an LA2A (still, given a choice... :)). I own a couple of 3 thousand dollar compressors, and about 6 others, and about 10 in the digital domain (The waves stuff is great) - and I've used dozens of different ones in different studios. My issues with the Behringer are that the limiter is pretty useless (better to set high ration/low threshold on the compressor section) and that, like many compressors, it takes out too much high end too early. Its fast, workmanlike, and transparant for the price. The Aphex has its own sound that some people like, and the DBX 166 is fine. It all depends what you need.

Unless you are used to working with compressors you might be hearing the blunting of high end or string attack in the other boxes rather than the compression - meaning the behringer is simply more transparant - a good thing. Make sure that you are taking out the same amount of program material when you are comparing them, and that
the attack and release times are identical. tvm.
