Are most full orchestra and full jazz band performances the kind of thing that could easily be done live to 2-track? Or is the mixing mostly done AFTER the performance?I guess what this boils down to is, how much are levels for various mics adjusted during the course of a typical piece? Does the engineer typically "bring up" and then "bring down" certain instruments when they have a brief solo, for example? I guess you could do this with spot mics, but sound-wise it must be awfully tricky to do that without generating the "trumpet on wheels" effect, where the trumpet (for example) is brought up in level for a short solo, and then brought down afterwards, and he seems to ride forward and then back into the ensemble.
The bottom line is I'm wondering how much of a pain it would be to do a live to 2-track recording, mixing down on the fly, of a large group recording, either full orchestra or a big jazz band, things like that. Both often have solos and things, and I just don't know how it's all done.
