Hi Dan,For what you've been describing, I think the USB solution is the best way to go.
(Firewire may be even better but will probably cost more so USB makes sense in this instance.)What do pros do? You'll get as many answers as there will be pros answering the question. I can supply one answer:
My last record went to tape but all my future projects will be recorded onto hard disk via a Firewire interfaced mic-pre/a-d (the Mobile IO from Metric Halo). I don't use a recording console (due to the sonic damage they all do) so the mics feed the mic-pre and get recorded straight from that.That's one answer of a possible million. Hope it helps.
