I'm trying to decide what burner to use in my home studio. I want a stand-a-lone unit, and the new Marantz CDR500 has a lot going for it; but Sony has just brought out two machines, both with their 'super bit mapping'. Looking at the quoted S/N and dynamic range figures for these units, the Marantz looks to be at quite a disadvantage (even Phillips machines have better statistics than the Marantz - curious, considering that Marantz is Phillips' "pro" arm). Can anyone please shed some light on the usefulness of super bit mapping, and whether or not it does improve the sound significantly? Incidentally, I need to record from both analogue and digital sources.
Many thanks,
JonathanW
