Re: Eon G2 vs. Mackie SRM

Hi TST,

"the only reason the plastic PA boxes with the amps on board sound better is because the extra weight and rigidity of the amp damps the cabinet walls."

Interesting thought. Cabinet wall damping is definitely a good thing!
I wonder how much cabinet wall damping comes from the amps?

Self-powered bi-amplified boxes have their limitations and
they have their advantages:
The amps are sized for most common use.
With active electronics on-board, there can be EQ, driver time alignment, limiting and other processing that matches the box's exact needs.
These boxes are reasonably priced for their performance because all parts of the system match.

"Also consider if an amp goes down you lose both the amp and the speaker util it's repaired or vise versa."

With separate speakers and amplifiers, if a monitor amp goes down it can take out two mixes.
If one self-powered monitor goes down, only one box is gone...

Every box has compromises.
I use a mix of self-powered and separately-amplifed boxes as needed.

"The JBL MR series uses (basically)the same components but the box is wood and sounds much better. If you can live with the sound and weight is the primary issue, get the unpowered boxes and a crown CE 4000 at under 30 lbs."

I'll take most self-powered Meyers or Turbosound TQ440SPs over JBL
MR boxes any day.
By the way, the MR boxes are no longer current production, did you mean MP series?

I too like the Crown CE-4000.

Good health, Weogo
