Regarding the Behringer DSP8024, I can only assume you had a faulty one. I have two - one in my home studio and one in my main hifi. Both units are totally silent. The DSP8024`s noise floor is way below that of CD so there shouldn`t be any problem with it introducing anything that isn`t already there! The one in the main setup is used only to take out some bass on a few CD`s that excite a room node round about 40Hz. They`re cheap and very flexible so it should be ideal for you.
As for sampling at 96kHz, you MIGHT be able to hear a bit more "air" in the sound or a bit more space around instruments but utimately I think you should sample at whatever the final medium will be i.e. 44.1 for CD, 48 for DAT etc. Just remember any conversion of sample rate will potentially lose information due to rounding errors in the maths etc. You`ll never get everyone to agree on what`s best!
Hope that helps.
