Which digital EQ for home audio room correction?

I'm experiencing some lumpy bass response in my listening room and decided to get a digital parametric equalizer to fix that problem (I already have various forms of room treatment installed, so the rest of the frequency range is fine). There are a few consumer-oriented devices out there (z-systems, Tact), but they cost a lot more than what I want to spend, so I've started investigating pro-audio equalizers.

For reference, my (consumer audio) system consists of a Perreaux SM-6 preamp (output 1.5Vrms) and a pair of active speakers (ATC SCM 50 ASLs, input sensitivity 1V), connected through 6m balanced interconnects.
I am planning on sticking the digital EQ between the preamp and the speakers and retaining the balanced configuration.

My specific questions:

- Does anyone have any positive experiences with moderately-priced pro devices, such as Ashly's Protea 2.24PS or dbx's Driverack 240? I'm particularly interested in comments on their sound quality and noise floor. I once tried a Behringer DSP8024, but that thing was excessively noisy (produced hiss that was very audible from my listening position). I was told at the time that the basic problem is that my consumer gear produces -10db output, whereas a pro device will expect +4db, hence the audible noise floor. I am wondering whether all pro devices will be noisy in my system or whether it's just the Behringer unit that's particularly noisy.

- How about Goldline EQ2? This one is available in a balanced -10db configuration, and is not too expensive ($1500), but the processor seems to be ancient (Motorola 56002). Has anyone had a chance to listen to this device?

- How do low-priced devices compare to high-priced ones such as XTA DP224 or Weiss EQ1?

- Generally speaking, does a 96kHz sampling frequency produce an audible improvement over 48kHz?
