Yes and no. Well that is so open ended....My multiband digital compressors get an audition, but I only use them for "trouble spots". Yes, some of the screwed up phase can be a delight to an artist, or producer, especially if it makes a certain set of instruments sound "fatter, Phatter"..or gives a better vibe.
What I shoot for is emotion in a recording. What most producers and artist like is analog tape saturation or "crunch". Some artist demand a full analog recording. I feel that if you really use good taste in mixing and mastering, just a little here and a little there, ( like salt and pepper) can do the trick.
As I have said earlyer, their are no secret settings that work. One must experiment and try to find the results that makes the "money folks" happy, and can yield a good selling product, that will work on most all format's, and be of fine vibe, and emotion.
My live stuff is normally non compressed, maybe just a shade of digital, or analog eq, to make up for a room problem.
