that RBP, among others, has made light of in the past.I can see why people want their CD's louder and brighter, with more sheen, etc, when they are trying to compete with B. Spears and other highly compressed pop (or even rock and alternative) stuff.
I'm not an engineer so my opinion is from the outside looking in, but still....
If you want the CD to be loud and "crisp", the mastering guys will have the big bucks (digital) multiband compressors, EQ's, and other goodies, and most importantly a good ear and a monitoring system they know *well*, plus they can help you get the sound you want for the audience youre looking at (and the equipment they'll probably be playing your CD on... boom box and Discman usually more likely than full-blown home stereo setup, etc.)
And overall, you won't be able to get anywhere near the same results doing your own compression, EQ, or normalization. Especially, don't compress your mixdown -- let them do that as part of the mastering. It will be a lot easier for them (meaning few hours billed to you) if you give them a mix that's uncompressed than if you try doing compression (and other stuff) to the final mix yourself.
