Recommendation for Beginner's Recording Equipment

I would like to record small acoustic groups on location in various venues (i.e. a mobile setup to use in churches, schools, etc.). Could someone recommend a minimalist equipment setup in the $5-10K range (or less if that's possible) that would produce high quality results? I really appreciate any input and am open to any ideas.
