I do field recording and board recording to a Sony MZ-R55 and find it great for a wide range of projects. Be sure to get a decent mic tho. I also have a Tascam MD301MkII which has digital ins & outs so I can edit & burn CDs w/out ever having to convert to analog. The CDs made from MDs do sound compressed and somewhat brittle but way better than cassettes & w/ much less hassle than fragile DAT tape. The ATRAC compression system that the MDs use continues to be improved by the manfacturers. It seems like in the project you describe fidelity may be secondary to convenience. Plus a portable MD recorder will fit in your shirt pocket.
