well the half-speed stuff was for vinyl mastering, yes-- Stan Ricker says that the main benefits are in the lowered requirements on the repro head. Also, there are benefits to being able to cut at half-speed , which effectively lowers your power requirements to 25% of what it would be if you cut at full speed, and cuts distortion in the HF. Problem is, if the entire chaing isnt world-class as far as low-end performance, you lose more than the "subsonics" -- you lose extension and slam in the low bass.What you said about the "matching" of all setting and preferably the deck itself when trying to re-master makes sense. I guess my first thought was just the component and design quality of the NR itself, since all the rest of the chain usually includes extremely high quality gear at all the good mastering houses. I thought perhaps the lil Dolby card represented a weak link even in cases where it is performing at its very best (identical settings, same deck, etc.)
