Need mixing console advice!

Setting up a 16 adat track basement studio. Want a good board. 24 or 32 ch I'm guessing. Mackie 8 bus boards came up as an option, but I've heard bad things about their mic preamps before. Any other comments on this? A guy's got an old teac Tascam 24x8 on ebay for pretty cheap. Any word on these? I'd be willing to spend up to $3,000 or so if we can find the right board. I just have no clue what would sound and work the best. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
