A gate is what you will need and you can easily find the "threshold" to set. You should use fast attack and slow release so as to not lose the beginning and ending of song cuts. The better the gate the blacker the slience will be. For the money DBX should work fine. You night even try the Alesis unit which sells for about $100 at Guitar Center or www.musiciansfriend.com .

You do not want to use the compressor function at all. This is strictly a live recording function as I would think you would want to retain all the dynamic range of your lps, many of which were probably compressed to death any way.
