What Bob Lee and old sound man among others have said is very good advice. Could we know possibly what kind of mixer is installed? There are some features built into many mixers that can help with gain structure, most notable headphone cueing with the PFL function, along with the associated meters. As a very general rule, having the input channel gain set to provide an average reading around 0db lets you have the best signal to noise and dynamic range. This also means in an ideal(read theoretical)set up that the faders would all be at 0db to provide an even mix. This won't really happen in reality, but it's a starting point. The trick is getting all the components in the chain lined up in the same manner, which maintains that ideal signal to noise ratio and dynamic range of your sound.
And, Bill, if you're leaving your amps wide open, it generally means your running a weaker signal upstream, where signal specs are going to be degraded, and then amplified out to the speakers, along with a higher noise floor being audible from the amps during quiet passages or inbetween numbers.Best regards,
John
