I am an old soundman, but not THE old soundman.Another way to think of this is to get rid of the notion that the knob marked gain is acutally turning up the amp. The knob is a sensivity adjusment. The way to look at it is to think that it's purpose is to pad the input of the amp down. If the knob is on 1 or 11, it is still going to let the amp produce it's rated power given a large enough input.
Watch out, pro amps also may contain a voltage sensitivity switch to further vary the sensitivity control.
