... the different types of mics (ie: cardioid vs. omni-directional vs. bidirectional). I was wondering whether a phase-shift accompanies eccentric rejection.

I thought this could explain some of the dull & flat sonic nature I've found in live audio vs. studio. (Granted, there's much less of this on DSP systems. IMHO, but the treble almost requires a metal domed horn to smooth out portable DAC discretization harshness).
