Your memories are of the latter. I've got a set of JBL studio monitors from the mid-80s, which are well built, sound great and are well documented from the engineering standpoint. This is the old JBL that we all grew up knowing.Then there's JBL - the brand. This, IMHO, is what Harmon Int'l bought. You see the brand on lots of stuff from car systems to computer systems. This is *not* your father's JBL, IMHO.
You can still get parts for many of the old JBL speakers, so I'd suggest that the old company, in a way, still exists. Get yourself some old JBLs, recone them and you're in business as you remember. This was my approach. Of course, it helped that the 4425s were picked up at a yard sale for $30.00.
Just keep the 2 things (brand vs old speaker company) separate and you'll be fine.
