I agree. The Trombone, and fretless bass are very nice instruments to master pitch. Since the Trombone requires microscopic adjustment of the slide....at speed for proper intonation, it is a great tool.One instrument that should receive study is the Human voice. In Vocal production, you must be able to coach the vocalist for punches. Phrasing and intonation skills here are an absolute must. Very seasoned vets of voice can "blow it" on a take, and if you do not catch all the mistakes immediatly, your vocalist could be 6000 miles away, a few days after the session, and you must either get them back to the mic, or do some keen repairs. Pitching with the Trombone is a very handy tool. I even coach vocalist with the bone.
Wind instruments like the Trumpet, Clarinet, Flute, French Horn, Baritone, And Sax are very nice to have around. When something happens to a recording, and your musician is gone, you can fill in in places, and they will never notice it was not them.
The "Ghost" in the studio (every studio has at least one) will dictate situations of surprise.
