If the amp is more than 20 years old chances are the main power supply filter caps are pretty much toast and could use replacement. Also, todays caps are quite a bit smaller than those of yesteryear, so he may be able to go with higher capacity caps that will still fit inside the 'tank' that the filter caps are mounted in. Between new caps and caps of higher capacity the amp would be considerably cleaner sounding.
