Y'know, those Alesis monitors REALLY are the best speakers in their range REALLY. I just purchased a pair as nearfields and I'm using the BIG Alesis Monitor Two's as farfields. If you're afraid of too pure a tone, why don't you also invest in some nice floorstanding consumer speakers and a reciever as reference monitoring? Their really affordable on ebay. The Alesis monitors are great because everything is made to work with the other amp/crossover/speaker. Don't be drawn to the NS-10's either. Unless you can afford a GREAT power amp like a manley. Crappy amp=crappy speakers...

Also, stray from the drastically cheap, overly featured(Behringer, other mackie knock offs, etc.) Remember- It's really cheap for a reason.
