The studio I work at is involved in the recording and post production of the PBS "American Soundtrack" series of oldies shows.We use 3 Otari RadarII HD based recorder and we love them!
They are about as close as digital will get to analog in my opinion.As far as backups from the hard drives, We have 2 which backup to DVD RAM cartridges and 1 which backs up to Exabyte (or Hi-8) tape.
Yes they are a bit pricey but You can't beat them.
