Re: 1" analog guy getting into digital needs help!!??

HD recorders are horrible at archiving unless you plan on buying a lot of hard drives. IF you plan not to save your tracking but rather do a 2mix and then archive that to CD, you will eventually have to pick and choose what tracking goes south or buy more hard drives. Even though the jury is out on the longevity of the ADAT format, I still like to go back to the adats from time to time to pull up a new mix or revisit old material and perhaps use some tracking from them. I personally have well over 2300 ADAT tapes and I could not imagine how many t-bytes of info that would be in HD format. It certainly would end up costing more than the blank ADATS by a long shot. IF you are a track/mix, earase kind of guy, I suppose you can get by with one of the HD recorders out there but my archives are a valuable resourse I am not about to give up. Why don't you keep the 1" format for its purpose and then grow to digital without giving up something first? When you erase tracking, it is gone for good.

Even though they are not gaining in popularity, the ADAT or 8MM formats make archiving a non issue.

Almost everyone I know that "got rid" of their analog machines are re-seeking them again for many many reasons.

Evaluate the importance of saving your tracking is the question you should answer before abondoning your analog format or going to a non linear format such as HD exclusively.
