Re: Amateur Recordist Questions

Here are my suggestions,
First, the masterlink is quiet enough to use in a room. As a matter of fact its silent. Quieter than a dat which has to move tape. My only worry would be having a hard drive copy as my only copy. I like to use a dat and a masterlink with dat tapes as safeties for gigs I cant not have a copy of.

As for a preamp, you can always find used preamps. Most will be an upgrade from your mackie (which is amazing for the money, but clearly falls short compared to a good preamp) My suggestions would be- a john hardy which should fall just above 1k. Second choice would be a studio technologies ($800 new). third choice woudl be down the line to a presonus 2 channel preamp. There are a million good preamps out there so Im not mentioning them all, just ones Ive used and liked. Check the sweetwater trading post for used deals.

Have fun and enjoy your recordings.
