Amateur Recordist Questions

24.89.0.18

This is a two question post please be patient.

I mainly make archival and reference records of live material. I have recorded church services, weddings, piano recitals, choral concerts and high school marching bands. Currently I have two sets of microphones AKG C-414 and Crown PZM 30D. I use the AKGs if they will allow the mics to be seen or the 30Ds if I need to be stealth. I hook the mics up to a Mackie mixer (only for phantom power) and then go directly, analog, into a DAT player.

1) I've been interested in the Alesis ML9600 for recording. The DAT player consumes tapes and increases my cost. I never reuse a tape. Is the ML9600 quiet enough to use in a room where the recording is being made? I know hard drives can be noisy.

2) I need to get rid of the Mackie mixer... I don't really need it I just need a decent mic preamp. Does anyone have a suggestion for a mic preamp that does 20-20 cleanly without the tube stuff? I’m guessing that the tube mic preamps are designed mainly to record the human voice closely and to add effect. I'm looking for a neutral sound. (price up to $1,000)

Thanks
