Re: Mic/preamp suggestions needed

Can't afford Neumanns and Manleys, but probably most else
************************************************************

you might be surprised..........since Neumann lost control over the
"gray market" importing of their mics, actual street prices for their products have fallen considerably. The KM180 series of small D condensers are now available for under $1k per pair. (they were heading down towards around $800/pair this spring, until the dollar tanked against the Euro) If that's still too much, you might want to look at the small D condensers from MBHO, a lesser known, but high quality German manufacturer. (they supply capsules to some of the most expensive "boutique" mic builders in the world).

Believe it or not, high quality mic preamps are more expensive than mics, these days. There are very few good mic preamps under $500/ch. And you will be wanting clear, "transparent" preamps for the type of work you mentioned. But RME, another German company (do you see a trend....) is shipping the QuadMic next week; a 4ch preamp for only $600 (discount price). RME is new to mic preamps, but they are a VERY highly respected manufacturer of top quality Analog to Digital converters. With the kind of reputation that they have earned over the past 10 years, no one expects them to offer anything but a very nice preamp. And at that price, it should be the best preamp deal out there.
