I'd be very careful, even if it is given away the maintainance/repair costs can be considerable and MCI's are not considered to be the most reliable. All this coupled with the significant cost of tapes, unless you are a well versed repair engineer it could well be a skip job.

If you are seriously looking to record eight tracks I would strongly recommend either an ADAT or digital system fro your computer. The benefits of analogue tape are only to be had on top machines in top condition used by highly experienced recording engineers.
