From a sonic standpoint the best tape machines of even 15 years ago aren't as good as todays cheap ($1,000 and less) 8 track digital decks that also include mixers and even internal CD burners. Good luck on finding tape for it as well. But tape does has the advantage of adding some compression and coloration that many find pleasing, so as part of a studio set up a tape deck is often a nice thing to have around. I'd pick it up as long as the price is less than $500. What would be an even better find would be a two track 1/2" deck- maybe an Otari or Ampex- that even today is a nice mastering rig for the reasons mentioned above. Many studios still track to digital, master to two-track tape and then go to CD.
