Why are [analog] tape edits cut at 45 deg or 60 deg, not 90 deg?

In looking into this question, I read somewhere that "90 degree cuts in analog nearly always spit back at you - it is to do with the lack of crossfade and instantaneous energy over the discontinuity."

Can anyone explain what this means....? I'm curious.
