If Eflat absolutely cannot get his mics close to the source, I agree, a *stereo* shotgun at distance doesn't make much sense, but using an additional pair of accent mics does.If I was trying to record any kind of environmental soundscape, I would certainly use spaced omni's, never a shotgun. (I'm biased--I don't even like the sound generated by hypercardioid patterns!) The difference in sound quality won't be subtle, and it would be much more versatile recording rig. With a sweet Nagra recorder, why compromise?!
