Re: Any field recording guys - Need help with shotgun mic recs

I'd have to agree with James. Shotgun microphones are definitely not the way to go for your application. When recording outdoors, a pair of spaced omnidirectional mics can't be beat. Shotgun mics produce the most colored sound--the more directional the pattern, the less natural the results will be. Omnis tend produce the most natural sound, and wind is less of a factor.

I'd suggest hanging mics in the tree and run long cables down to the equipment.

I've used my ADK A-51TL's at a few outdoor music festivals, in a spaced omni config, and the results are great. Spacing has been between 10' and 25' feet. And just from messing around with them on my roof deck, they do justice to birdsong.

Good luck!
