I am a sometime buyer of used equipment, but when it is so heavily dependent on a delicate mechanical components such as a DAT transport I assume the sale is of equipment that is expensively out of spec.
The $230 Sony R500 is an amazing sale as that one is $1600 new.
Yes, even a medium four head VHS is the best quality audio recorder a person could have at home and for the same reason that DAT is so good- the revolving head. In a DAT this simulates a reel to reel tape speed of 138 ips.
Your SPDIF on PC idea is a good one so the DAT digital stream goes directly onto the hard drive without processing through the soundcard D to A and back to D.
