You would only want to add an outboard mixer if your pre doesn't have sufficient inputs, as any additional electronics in the chain will add noise. If you have to add a mixer make sure it is a stereo unit- most pro console style mixers are stereo out, but have only mono inputs- and be sure it is level compatable at -4 dB with home stereo sources, as opposed to the +10dB pro standard. Beware of so-called DJ mixers- most have terrible noise specs. The only real advantage to a mixer is the ability to blend multiple sources and fade between them- if additional inputs are all you need a passive switching box may be a better- and far cheaper- choice.
