Help with Line Mixer Selection, Please?

I have been "upgrading" my home stereo set-up: Altec A7-8's, Rane MX-22 crossover, SEQ-30S equalizer, MA-6S amplifier. Now I want to be able to manage my sources (CD, DVD, Tuner, Tape, etc...) but I don't know what the equivalent of my "passive" preamp is in pro stuff. The preamp (Adcom SLC-505) is a series of stereo source switches with a master volume control. I'm thinking the Rane SM 82 line mixer is the equivalent sort of thing, except that being a mixer the sources are not switched out, I guess their gain is just lowered to "0". Am I correct in this assumption? Is there something else used in clubs to mix pre-recorded sources? TIA for any help.
