There's a mobile recording truck in town that uses Mackies for 5.1... IT's okay up to a point, but rather deceiving at the low end.-In fact Greg mackie has Genelec speakers in his own studio, so what does that tell you? -When they first launched the Mackie actives, they demoed them at our facility, and the local Mackie rep wanted to be clear that they were after the same market, but at a lower price point.
Which is better? -Your call. Which is a better value? -No contest. -For home use they will be just fine, but for fine judgement calls in the LF area, stay away from the mackies. -Again, this isn't an issue for end-user listening.
I have some serious issues with the PMC transmission-line monitors. -Very flattering, very stunning ("How'd they get so much extension out of a box that small?" and so on...) but at the end of the day, I find them utterly confusing when it comes to low frequency judgement calls. -Sometimes I've wondered where all the bass went if I took a tape home, sometimes my home listening experiences would be sawash with LF that didn't seem so big in the control room... You know, when all is said and done, transmission line is fine for "big sound-small box" experiences, but if quality is the driving factor, I can't use 'em... -I just make far too many mistakes when I'm using them.
-One final thought on transmission line... Three words... "Bose Wave Radio"
Myself I'm happy with the Tannoys, but I could be just as happy -or even more so- with Mackies... at home.
