I agree with you that the Mackie's represent excellent sound for the price, certainly better to my ears than the Genlec's. My only reservation on their sound is the slightly "odd" sounding bass characteristic. As you probably know they have a Passive Bass Radiating system to extend the low frequency response. I have always found passive bass radiating systems to sound unatural, I think it must be due to phase response. If you are looking for a really great sounding surround system, it is worth checking out the PMC speakers. A lot of their speakers have found their way into film dubbing suites. Arguably you will be hearing it very close to how the sound engineers themselves did during the mix.
