I would second the recommendation for the Marantz. Being part of the Phillips group they have a good reputation in CD and CDR products, together with a reputation for reliable mechs. I've owned both a Marantz CDR and CD player, with good experiences. Being able to control analogue levels is simple, not many devices include digital level control, particulary if you are looking to boost low levels.

As pointed out above, the CDR in your computer is another cheaper option.
