I hadthe Tascam CDRW-700 for a while and it performed flawlesly. I think it has all the features you need for under $500. I can't remember if the Tascam will take 'non music' discs, pretty sure it does but you would want to check when you look at one.
I upgraded to the CDRW-5000 after a few months 'cause I wanted balanced in/outs.
