You have probably hit it... the FX knobs on each channel SEND that channels signal to outboard effects... chorus, reverb, echo, whatever.
Then they come back and go throuhg the FX Return on your board. So, yes, turning that up should do it.
If you run into distortion there, then try higher settings on each individual FX send, and a low setting on the FX Return, or vice versa.
Some of this can get confusing if you are not familar with the exact path the signal takes. Most manuals will have a signal flow schematic, as well as a description of what each control does. I have xeroxed the signal flow schematic and laminated it, taped it to the back of my head for reference by others.
