Aha - the FX return knob has an arrow/line linking it to the Master Volume control on the mixer, and is graduated from infinity full left, to +22db full right. Would this be a line-level matching thing, to enable different level effects to be matched to input level? I presumed it was a mix knob, but each channel has individual FX mix controls. If I have it only half way up, that would cause a loss of preamp gain? That might explain why the tape line-ins are so loud - they probably directly bypass this control.
