Mic Preamps

I'm trying to get a better live sound, vocally. (Rock-small clubs)
Right now I'm using:
SM58-MackieMixer-(effects looped Quadraverb2)-AlesisMEQ230-BBE Maximizer-Mackie1400i amp-Yamaha S115IV Speakers.
My main question is how much would I benefit from a standalone Preamp as opposed to the inboard Mackie pre's? I'm thinking about a <$400 type preamp: Something like ARTMP, ART TUBEPAC, JOE MEEK, etc.
Any Suggestions?
