You have to go with what you hear. I never considered putting the speakers across the short side of the room. But one thing that I do, that I have not seen done by anyone else, is I put my near field studio monitors on lazy Susan's on top of my speaker stands. A set up like that might give you more flexibility in the dining area. Because you can easily turn the speakers in that direction.
They cost about $5.00. If you don't like the sound I am sure you can find other uses for them.
