Budget Active Speakers for a small living room

Hi guys,

I posted a thread over at General Asylum seeking suggestions for an audio setup for under $1000.
Many of the replies suggest active monitors, which I admit I've been looking at as well.

How do active studio monitors work in a living room environment for two channel audio? And some TV/movies (will be plugged in to the TV)?

I was previously looking at the Audioengine A5+ given the attractive pricing which would allow me to get a DAC to hook up to my Mac - probably wirelessly with an Airport Express.
But these are bottom of the heap and not pure active monitors.

Was told to look at the likes of the Adam A3/5/7 or the Dynaudio BM5/6 etc. Saw a couple of Youtube videos on some Genelecs which sounded amazing even through Youtube but man those are pricey.

Please do provide me with suggestions on what I should audition guys?

My musical tastes tend towards 50's 60's Jazz but I do listen to modern music occasionally.
