Here is what I would do:For DVD-V I would go with WinDVD or PowerDVD (your choice). TOSLINK SPDIF out to Yamaha. If you want DVD-A, I think both will do that as well, but then you need a 7.1 channel soundcard and run a RCA's (analog) over to the Yamaha as well, since DVD-A is NOT sent over digital - it is downmixed to 16/48 for copy protection reasons.
For 2-channel audio, I would definately go through the trouble of getting a good SPDIF output that uses either Kernel Streaming or ASIO drivers for EITHER Winamp or Foobar. USB->SPDIF solutions are available, or you can get an actual USB DAC just for 2-channel that goes from USB straight to I2S with no SPDIF conversion in between. See this thread for more info:

You can get tonnes of help here (me included) on how to set up the software (Foobar / Winamp) - and you don't need to get fancy schmancy. I just use them as media players with the GUI colors and fonts fancied up a bit - no album info or cover art. I don't need that stuff to be honest, but some folks think it's all the rage. Some can't live without it.
Foobar output plugins for ASIO are available right from the Foobar site - plugins section.
Winamp ASIO plugins are available here:

Winamp Kernel Streaming Plugin is available here:

Good luck. Have fun.
Cheers,
Presto
