I've got a RPI 3 (no extra antenna) about 40' from the router and show a strength of 78 when I run the pCP wifi scanner.
You might try moving the player or router to a different position and see if that helps. A story from some years ago in another house explains why. I had the router in a 2nd floor office and a Roku player in the kitchen. The connection was very spotty while another Roku -- the same distance from the router in a room next to the kitchen -- worked fine. It turned out that if you drew a straight line from the router to the kitchen Roku, there was a washer/dryer combo in a closet directly in the way. Those large, grounded metal boxes were right in the way. Since they were in a closet, it was an "out of site, out of mind" issue until I started looking for the problem. Moving the router about 3' to the left solved the problem.
Probably worth experimenting with positioning a bit to see if that's your issue. Besides appliances, things like HVAC sheet metal duct work hidden in the walls might also be in the way.
