Different approaches

I prefer using small headless computers with tiny music playback only operating systems (135 MB vs >2 GB) that require only 1A vs 12A of power. Attached via Ethernet or WiFi to a media server located elsewhere.

General purpose computers like the Mac Mini (have one myself) are great for their intended purpose but are overkill in terms of computational power, generate more noise and run hundreds of processes doing all manner of other things. Mine is running 557 as I type.
