Home Computer Audio Asylum

Music servers and other computer based digital audio technologies.

That's because you're chasing a popular myth.

ASIO does not mean "NO level sliders will work". Why would it? This is a myth, and it's not a valid "test" for bitperfect playback. ALL ASIO products I have used have a mixer, and there are digital level controls for various I/O and a master level control.

If the device can be selected in Windows "Sounds and Audio Devices", then it must be WDM capable as well. In this case, even when operating in ASIO mode, the windows "mixer" appears to be able to control the volume.

First I would ask: why select an ASIO/WDM capable device as a Windows default playback device in the FIRST place? Select an onboard codec instead and shut all the I/O off, including sound schemes and system sounds (like beep). In fact, if you open the Windows audio control panel, and slide the volume up and down while having the ASIO mixer open, you will see the two level controls move SIMULTANEOUSLY. What does this mean? It's the SAME LEVEL CONTROL showing up in two different gui's - you move one, the other moves and vice versa.

If it bothers you that windows is able to detect the "WDM" side of your devices driver, then simply select another audio device that is not in use. Onboard codecs are great for this!

Hope this helps,

Cheers,
Presto
