It may not be strictly the hardware is better, but the chipset drivers for the CPU/chipseets etc. For instance, the nForce drivers do affect the way services are prioritized and latency. It's a crap shoot whether you get a winning combination or not, there are just too many variables. Fiddling with services has a good chance of working if you have the skill and patience, as you are then affecting the stacking and latency of the whole system.
