Crimson is correct that the bitrate is determined how efficiently the compressor can shrink the original material. With lossless compression, the fidelity is not effected by the bitrate. With Lossy compression like MP3 or AAC, the bitrate DOES determine how much of the original is thrown away and consequently, how much the fidelity suffers.I've used FLAC to losslessly compress my library. Most tracks compress to around 600-900Kbit/s. Older recordings (Jazz from the 1920-40's) that have a narrow frequency range compress to around 200-400Kbit/s.
